The lights dim
The curtains rise
The music starts
And the show begins

The people on stage converse and giggle
The audience laughs
The mood changes
They cry and yell
And the tension lingers in the air

But suddenly everything shifts
The noise fades away
And the light moves
As she enters the stage
The spotlight on her face
Shining like a diamond

He has never seen someone so beautiful
Yet so far away
As he reaches to hold her hand
She is whisked away
By another

He looks to see who has stolen her away
Away from everything he dreams of
Yet he cannot speak when he sees who
Because of course it is him

Romeo and Juliet
There is no one else
He twirls her into his arms
In a sweet embrace
They dance across the stage
And time no longer exists

They take a bow
And when the roses have landed
Reality comes back
Gently setting a hand on his shoulder
Reminding him not to wallow or grieve what he doesn’t have
As it simply wasn’t meant to be
