“So, how’s Brent doing?” I ask my best friend Mason when he sits down on the leather couch.
“Doing well, we hung out a few days ago.” He smirks.
“And how are you doing?”
“Pretty nervous, not gonna lie.” He looks down at his feet.
“Hey, you’re gonna be great. If Brent rejects you, it’s just because he’s stupid. Anyone can see that both of you would make the perfect couple; I can tell he likes you too.” I join him on the couch. He obviously has more luck on the love side than I do.
“But what if he rejects me?”
“Dude, you said yourself he was stalking you on socials . . . he definitely likes you.”
“What if I don't — ”
“You’re gonna ask him. And he's gonna say yes,” I interrupt him and he slumps down beside me.
“What's there to like about me anyway?” He mumbles.
“Are you kidding me? You're smart, kind, good looking, athletic, friendly — what's not to like about you?” I throw a cushion at him.
“You really think so?” He asks and I silently nod.
“I'm calling him over right now. I’m tired of waiting for one of you two to make a move.” I text Brent to “come over asap”.
“No!” He yelps.
“It's done. He’ll be here in five minutes.” I smirk.
“What do I do? What do I do?!”
“Come here.” I grab his arm and pull him to the kitchen. I hand him a small plate of cookies. “When he comes, offer these to him — they're his favorite.”
Mason groans as we hear the doorbell and he walks to open the door.
I give him a cheeky smile and thumbs up as he rolls his eyes and opens it.
“Hey friends!” Brent grins as he takes a cookie and follows Mason to the couch.
“Hey, Mason has something he wants to tell you.” I gesture for Mason to get off of his phone and confess.
“Oh really? What is it Mace?” He smirks and tries putting his elbow on Mason’s shoulder but Mason shrugs his arm off.
“Nothing.” He gets up and grabs a cookie. “There's nothing to tell.”
“Mason!” I groan. “OK, I'll just do all the work, like usual. Brent, Mason has been wanting to tell you this for a while.”
“Why is this starting to sound so dramatic?” Brent chuckles.
“Just shut up. Mason is in love with — ”
“Nicole.” Mason interrupts me and squeezes my hand.
“What?” Brent and I gasp. This is so stupid, now Mason is using me because I’ve never had luck for my own love?
“It’s true. I love you, Nicole.” Mason tightens his grip on my hand, then puts his mouth right next to my ear. “I’m not ready, I don’t even know if I’m actually attracted to guys or not. So stop trying to play Cupid again.”
“That’s stupid, it’s been months. And never!” I smirk.
“So when’s the wedding?” Brent interrupts.
“Shut up! Mason, please tell us your actual news,” I coax.
“Fine. I’m not in love with Nicole. I think, I’m in love . . . with you. There, I said it, I’m outta here.” Mason starts to sprint out before I catch him and hold him in place. We stare at Brent’s amused reaction while we anticipate his response, with Mason shivering in my grasp.
“Wait, really?” Brent finally responds.
“Yes, he has been in love with you undeniably for months. Almost a year. Get with it!” I snap.
“I mean, so have I. I just didn’t want to — ”
“Ruin anything?” Mason interrupts.
“Yeah. But I guess that didn’t happen.” Brent smiles, then asks, “Will you go out with me?”
“Say yes,” I whisper to the unresponsive Mason.
“Y-yes.” Mason snaps out of his trance.
“Great! Now let’s watch a movie so this awkwardness can end,” I exclaim and switch on a rom-com, leaving the lovebirds just staring into each other's eyes.
Dang, I need love. Why do I gotta be so unlucky? Sucks to be Cupid all the time.
