The doors close, snapping me out of my daydream.
I look around as the train starts moving;
There are new people today, not only the normal dreary commuters.
A girl with a gold necklace settles in opposite to me and starts to read.
She flips through the pages silently, as I’m sure she has done hundreds of times before.
She stifles a laugh, not wanting to disturb anyone else,
And I wonder what is so funny.
As she continues to read, the train makes a stop --
Yet she doesn’t look up.
I consider what she could be seeing;
Is she watching the sunrise break through the clouds, setting the sky ablaze?
Are the tears in her eyes drowned out by the rain on her face?
Or is the knight in shining armor keeping her so captivated?
I guess I’ll never know.
She continues to read, and my gaze drifts away.
Past everything rushing by us outside,
To a boy in a blue sweater sitting on the other side of the train.
He sleeps peacefully on his arm, as if it were a pillow,
Unbothered by the conscious world around him.
I ponder about where he could be for a moment.
Maybe he is drifting through space,
Floating and weightless in the cosmos.
Stars shining so brightly around him he forgets he is alone.
He smiles slightly, and my mind shifts.
Maybe he is laying in the sun, soaking up all the warmth his heart and body can take.
He turns, bringing me back to the train, and continues sleeping.
We roll to a stop, arriving at the next station.
I watch the passengers get on and off, and the train starts to move again.
My gaze drifts to the window, to the world outside,
And my mind floats away.
