Lots of things are little — like humans. They are tiny. They are so small, they can make houses out of tree stumps. They are smaller than blueberries. Humans are very fond of berries, even though it takes four to carry a small one. They named their kingdoms after berries. Even the royal families are named after berries. They all live in perfect harmony. The humans are tiny. They are so sweet. They could fit in the palm of your hand if you picked them up. They live in their small world. No one does any exploring because why would they? These humans have a perfect balance. No one wants to change — except for one. This little human is named Bean. Bean wanted to explore. No one that Bean knew agreed with her. “Bean, we have all we need here. And if you still want to explore, explore the other kingdoms!” Bean, of course, wasn’t happy.
“Who are you?” Bean asked.
I looked around. There wasn’t anyone else in the room. Me?
“Yeah. You.”
I’m a special person.
“Special? Why are you talking about me?”
Because I’m here to help you on your adventures.
“I get to go on adventures? But — ”
No buts. Just go!
And so, with a little nudge from me, Bean prepared to go on her adventure. “Journal, flashlight, food, drinks, clothes . . . ”
Bean, you’re forgetting something.
“What?”
You need to take your lucky beanie.
“Oh, yeah!” Now Bean had pretty much everything.
When Bean went to her parents to say goodbye, they were distraught with the idea of her exploring. “No, Bean. You don't get to explore outside the kingdoms.” So Bean decided to sneak out.
“But I’m not good at that!”
Bean, for the purpose of this story, you are sneaking out. Tonight.
“Story?”
Just do it.
“Fine.” Bean waited until the middle of the night and ensured her parents were asleep. She tip-toed down the hallway and avoided all of the creakiest floorboards, except one — the one that was always quiet until she needed to be stealthy. Her parent's room light went on immediately, so she stopped being sneaky and darted out of the house. She quickly ran into the woods and hid behind a tree. “Hey, person? Can I ask you something?”
Yes.
“How come everything is happening just as you describe it?”
I don't know.
“Yes, you do.”
This isn’t the time.
Bean kept going until she left the Berry Kingdoms behind her. “Which way do I go now?”
Turn left, and keep going left.
“Okay.” Bean just kept going left, and she noticed she had more energy as she went. She felt amazing, like she was going to see the entire world. She decided to rest briefly, when she noticed what looked like a city. She didn’t know there was civilization outside the Berry Kingdoms, seeing as no one else had ever cared to explore this far away. “I’m going to explore that later,” said Bean, who wanted to nap for a while.
She woke up in what looked like a hospital.
“Are you okay?” someone asked. “I found you sleeping at the root of a tree . . . ”
Bean woke up to see a girl dressed like a princess, but with a shorter dress and combat boots. And a sword. A GIANT SWORD. Bean did what any person in her situation would. She screamed.
“Who are you?” Bean asked.
