An afternoon, filled with gloom
We sat and waited,
I almost fainted,
When we heard the news

Ring! Ring! Ring!

My hand jolted forward
And through the phone
His voice sounded monotone
Until it broke into a groan

My heart sped
And it was fed
Fed with the most putrid news

My heart spit it out
Not wanting to accept it
Not wanting to swallow its bitter taste
The sun was beginning to set

Slowly, slowly, slowly

A lip trembled
And teeth bit the inside of my cheek
A tight grip around her hand
Her sorrowful eyes staring into mine

A tapping foot against old wood
Where you used to play
And fall
And cry
The looks of a golden sunset
In your teary eyes

Something that changed over time
As you laid in a white bed, in a white room, with white curtains, and even paler, white skin
Your eyes turned white too

It reminded me of when rain clouds stormed around in the sky
And you’d be devastated because you couldn’t go outside
Until they eventually went away
And I got to see your smile again
But not this time

I guess those clouds will forever remain in your eyes
Even while there’s a sunset outside.
