The Sunrise

The sun rises over the hill
Breaking its way -
Through the clouds -
Lingering from the storm

Reflecting its light -
In the drops of dew

Resting on trees and blades of grass
Resting on the treetops and leaves
Warming the ground

Bare branches reaching out
To grasp the light -
So their flowers can grow

The sun reaches the sky
And showers the earth with color

But as the people awaken
The sunshine fades

A cloud passes the sun
And they look to see -
What has happened

And realize the storm has returned.

The Storm

The storm settles in
Dropping rain on rooftops and windows

Sending people below scurrying
To find somewhere dry

Puddles start to form
In the dips of the cement
And water washes away
Yesterday’s footprints

But outside people begin to complain

About wanting the sunshine back
A stranger looks out the window
Towards the sky

And gray clouds
Wrap around them -
Like a blanket of comfort.
